Why sleep is good for you?

Did you know we spend about a third of our lives asleep. Sleep is essential, alongside eating and breathing and plays a vital role in good health and well-being. One in three of us suffers from poor sleep and as we age the prevalence of sleep disorders increases.

Sleep and health are strongly related. By getting enough good quality sleep helps to protect our mental health, physical health, quality of life and safety.

Seven benefits of a good night’s sleep:

  • Improves and restores immune function
  • Helps to regulate metabolism
  • Boosts mental wellbeing
  • Reduces the risk for diabetes
  • Increases sex drive
  • Aids healing and repair of heart and blood vessels
  • Improves the ability to memorise

Tips for a good night’s sleep:

  • Always sleep at regular times
  • Make sure you take time to wind down
  • Make your bedroom sleep-friendly e.g. have good ventilation
  • Keep a sleep diary
  • Avoid caffeine, including chocolate, too close to bed
  • No screens at least 2 hours before bed
  • Diffuse essential oils that promote relaxation, such as lavender

As an osteopath, sleep pattern is one of the things we look at with musculoskeletal issues as it is one of the most integral components for the body’s healing processes. As sleep is a habit, by reviewing and addressing behaviours that may have been adopted, it will hopefully help to improve your sleeping habits and help you to be more productive throughout the day.
