We are well into hay fever season, and while many of us look forward to the sunshine, for hay fever sufferers, this time of year can be miserable.

Hay fever affects several million people worldwide, with the UK having one of the highest rates of sufferers. The condition can last from the end of March to September, with tree pollen causing problems at the start of the season and grass pollen dominating the middle to the end of the season.

Hay fever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis, falls under the broader category of Allergic Rhinitis. This includes a perennial form that affects those sensitive to other allergens like dust, animal fur, and perfume, causing symptoms throughout the year.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Approach to Hayfever:

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), hay fever is treated by expelling internal wind from the nose. However, other organs, including the lungs, spleen, liver, and kidneys, are often involved in the treatment process. Many clients respond well to acupuncture, experiencing significant symptom relief. Acupuncture can be used alongside western medications such as antihistamines.

Hayfever Case History:

Simon came to see me in May 2023, having suffered from hay fever for most of his adult life. His symptoms typically start in early May and continue until September, making this time of year particularly dreadful for him.

During his first session, Simon presented with a runny nose, red itchy eyes, a slight cough and wheeze, a sore throat, watery eyes, sneezing, a blocked nose, and tiredness. He was taking daily antihistamines, but they only provided minimal relief.

We used acupuncture on body points combined with ear points to expel wind heat, tonify lung and spleen qi, and support the kidneys. Within three sessions, Simon experienced a 80% reduction in his symptoms. He was able to start enjoying his summer again and, more importantly, spend time back in his allotment.

If you are unsure about whether acupuncture can help you, please feel free to email or call the clinic with any questions or just reach out for a chat!
